I Shall Not Die but Live
Psalm 118:17
"I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD." (NKJV)
Message
Psalm 118:17 is one of the most powerful declarations of faith and hope in Scripture. It is a bold statement of confidence in God's preserving power: "I shall not die, but live." This declaration goes beyond physical survival; it speaks of purpose, testimony, and divine preservation.
Life often confronts people with fear, danger, sickness, discouragement, and hopelessness. At such moments, faith must rise above fear. The psalmist did not deny the reality of affliction, but he chose to declare God's promise over his situation. "The LORD has chastened me severely, but He has not given me over to death" (Psalm 118:18).
God is the giver and sustainer of life. "In Him was life, and the life was the light of men" (John 1:4). Every breath we take is sustained by His mercy. When believers place their trust in Him, they can face uncertainty with confidence.
The declaration "I shall not die but live" is also connected to purpose. The psalmist said he would live "to declare the works of the LORD." Preservation is tied to assignment. God keeps His people because He still has purpose for their lives. As long as your assignment is not complete, God's hand remains upon you.
This Scripture also teaches the power of speaking faith. "Death and life are in the power of the tongue" (Proverbs 18:21). Words spoken in faith align the heart with God's promises. Believers should learn to speak life rather than fear and despair.
However, this declaration is not reckless denial of reality. Faith does not ignore wisdom or proper care. Rather, it chooses to trust God above circumstances while walking in obedience and wisdom.
Jesus Christ is the ultimate source of life. He declared, "I am the resurrection and the life" (John 11:25). Through His death and resurrection, believers receive eternal life and hope beyond the grave. Even physical death loses its sting because Christ has conquered it.
The promise of life includes spiritual vitality. Many people are physically alive but spiritually empty. Christ came not merely to extend existence but to give abundant life. "I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly" (John 10:10).
In difficult seasons, this declaration becomes an anchor of hope. When fear whispers defeat, faith responds: "I shall not die but live." When discouragement rises, God reminds us that our story is not finished.
Today, speak life over yourself, your family, and your future. Refuse hopelessness and hold firmly to God's promises.
You are preserved for purpose.
You are sustained by grace.
You shall live to declare the works of the Lord.
